Where is your shelter located?
Cause for Canines is a foster-based rescue, so we do not have a public shelter to visit. All dogs are cared for in the homes of our volunteers or, in some cases, temporarily with a trainer or veterinarian. Approved adopters will be given instructions on how and where to meet the dog you are interested in.
We are committed to placing each dog in a safe, stable, and loving forever home. The following guidelines help ensure the best possible match for both dogs and adopters.
WHAT ARE YOUR APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS?
We have specific guidelines in place to ensure the best possible outcomes for the dogs in our care:
We adopt only within Ohio
Adopters must be 23 years or older
Households with children under 5 years old are not eligible at this time
All current pets must be up to date on vaccinations and wellness care, including preventative medications:
Your current dogs must be up to date on all shots (Rabies, DHPP, leptospirosis required, Bordetella is strongly suggested especially if you visit parks, doggy daycare and kennel your dogs when out of town).*
Your cats must be up to date on Rabies*
Heartworm preventative is required as well as routine heartworm checks with your vet.*
Your current pets must be spayed/neutered.*
Pets must have routine wellness checks with your vet.*
*Health exceptions will be verified and discussed with your vet
What are your adoption fees?
Adoption fees vary based on age and medical needs:
Sponsor Dog - $495
A sponsor dog is a younger dog or puppy that is considered a higher demand breed or breed mix. These dogs help to “sponsor” other dogs or puppies in the rescue that require more extensive medical care such as surgery or long term care.
Puppies under 6 months - $395
7 months - 7 years - $350
8+ years or dogs with special needs - $195
Fees include spay/neuter, microchip, vaccinations, deworming, and preventative care unless otherwise noted. All dogs over 6 months of age are heartworm tested unless otherwise noted in their description.
Why haven’t I heard from you yet?
As a volunteer-run rescue, response times may vary. We are working as quickly and diligently as possible to respond to every inquiry.

Application and vet/landlord responses may take time
Give your vet and landlord contact a heads up that someone from Cause for Canines will be in touch and you authorize them to speak with us and answer questions regarding your application.
Home visits and reviews typically take 1–3 weeks
WHY WAS I DENIED?
Many of our dogs come from less fortunate situations. As such we thoroughly screen all applicants. We emphasize the need for a stable environment for our pups which includes: having a secure job and income to care for the dog, and stable housing. Written landlord approval is required when applicable.
We reserve the right to deny any application at our discretion. It is our goal to place animals where we feel they will fit best, not necessarily in the order the applications are received. We carefully review every application to ensure the best match for each dog. While not every application can be approved, our decisions are always made with the dog’s safety and long-term success in mind.
With that being said common reasons for denials include:
Current pets are not up to date on vaccinations and/or not on heartworm preventative.
Current pet is not spayed/neutered
You are not 23+.
You do not live in Ohio.
You have children under 5 years of age in the household.
Your landlord does not allow pets.
I am looking for a therapy dog, can you help?
While many of our dogs make wonderful companions, we cannot guarantee suitability for therapy or service work, nor can we guarantee a dog will be hypoallergenic.
I need to find a new home for my dog
We understand that life changes happen. Please fill out our owner surrender form so we can gather important details and find the best possible foster placement for your dog.
